Change How People Treat You Without Saying a Word

You know the person. The coworker who’s always short with you. The family member who picks a fight at every holiday. The friend who somehow makes you feel small every time you hang out. You’ve tried talking to them. You’ve tried avoiding them. And the conventional wisdom says you can’t change other people, so you might as well give up.

I disagree. You can’t control someone else’s will. But you have far more power over how people treat you than you’ve been taught. And one of the most powerful tools for it doesn’t involve saying a single word to them. You do it at night, right before you fall asleep.

    Boundaries first

Before anything else: always have boundaries. If someone is abusing you, please walk away. You do not deserve to be abused, and no visualization practice is a reason to stay. Untangling yourself from an abusive experience is its own intense healing process, and it deserves real support.

What I’m talking about here is the huge gray zone of relationships that aren’t abusive but aren’t comfortable either: the tension, the friction, the old patterns that keep replaying.

    Your expectations are broadcasting

Here’s the mechanism. In your mind, you carry an expectation of how another person will behave toward you. Without realizing it, you project the energy of that expectation, and it pulls the expected behavior out of them. If someone always picks fights with you and you walk in expecting a fight, you’re already on the defensive. Your body, your tone, your face all say: here we go again. And so, here you go again.

Psychologists call this a self-fulfilling prophecy, and there’s a classic study that shows it beautifully. In 1977, Mark Snyder, Elizabeth Tanke, and Ellen Berscheid had men talk on the phone with women they’d never met. Before the call, each man was shown a photo he believed was his partner, either an attractive woman or an unattractive one. The photos weren’t actually of the women on the line. Yet the women whose partners believed they were attractive came across as warmer, friendlier, and more confident. The men’s expectations changed how they spoke, and the women responded in kind.

You can see little pieces of this everywhere: in dating, in job interviews, in “dress for success.” How you see someone shapes how they show up for you.

    Revision: Neville Goddard’s practice

The practice I use comes from Neville Goddard, a Barbados-born mystic and teacher who lectured in New York and Los Angeles from the 1930s until his death in 1972. Neville taught that imagination creates reality, and one of his most beloved techniques is called revision.

The idea is simple. At the end of each day, you replay any moment that didn’t go the way you wanted, and you revise it in your imagination until it plays out the way you wish it had. Neville taught this in lectures like “The Pruning Shears of Revision” (1954). Like a gardener pruning a plant, you cut away the scenes you don’t want to grow, so they stop shaping your future.

Neville connected revision to the biblical idea of repentance. The Greek word in the New Testament, metanoia, means a change of mind. For Neville, to repent was to re-think: to change your inner picture of an event, and with it, the reality it would otherwise keep producing.

He also taught that the best time to do this is in what he called the “state akin to sleep,” that drowsy, relaxed, half-dreaming moment right before you drift off, when the imagination is vivid and the inner critic is quiet.

    How to practice revision

    1. Pick the moment. Lying in bed, choose one interaction from the day, or a recurring dynamic with one person, that left a charge in you.
    2. Get drowsy. Let your body relax completely. You want to be in that soft, almost-asleep state, not wide awake and analyzing.
    3. Replay it, revised. Run the scene again, but this time the person treats you exactly the way you wish they would. They listen. They soften. They say the kind thing. You respond from peace.
    4. Make it emotional and detailed. Don’t just think it; feel it. Hear their voice. Notice the relief in your chest. The more sensory and emotional the scene, the more powerful it is.
    5. Loop it until it feels real. Repeat the revised scene a few times, or simply rest in the feeling, and let yourself fall asleep inside it.
    6. Notice what changes. You’ll often wake up with a lighter, more peaceful heart. Watch for shifts over the following days and weeks, in them, and in you.

You can revise the past, too. Old fights, painful conversations, moments from childhood: anything that still carries a charge can be replayed the way it should have gone.

    Why it works

From a UNICULT perspective, your relationships are the fourth of your circles of power. Your influence there isn’t as direct as it is over your own thoughts, but it flows from them. When you revise a scene before sleep, you reduce the charge you’re carrying toward that person. You wake up with a peaceful heart, and that peace radiates outward. You stop broadcasting “here we go again,” so they stop receiving it.

Psychology has a cousin of this practice, too. Imagery rehearsal therapy, used to treat chronic nightmares, asks people to rewrite a recurring nightmare into a new, less distressing version while awake, then rehearse the new version regularly. Clinical studies have found it can significantly reduce how often the nightmares return. The mind, it turns out, is willing to take a new script when you rehearse it with intention.

    Accountability, not blame

I know how this can sound: like I’m saying it’s your fault when someone treats you badly. That’s not what I mean. No one should treat anyone cruelly. When people are mean, it’s because they’re in pain inside their own psyche.

But here’s the thing about blame and accountability. If it’s entirely their fault and there’s nothing you can do, you’re powerless. You’re a victim waiting for someone else to change. When you take accountability for your side of the energy, the expectations you carry, the charge you bring into the room, you take your power back. Accountability isn’t a punishment. It’s a way out.

So tonight, before you fall asleep, pick one person. Picture them treating you the way you’ve always wished they would. Feel it. Let yourself rest in it. Then let it go, and see who shows up tomorrow.
