I started my spiritual journey as a witch. I made spell books. I did rituals. I changed my life with magic. So I understand the pull as well as anyone: you love someone, they don’t love you back, and you think, what if I could just make them?
I don’t think witchcraft is bad, and I don’t think love spells are bad. Wanting love is one of the most human things there is, and magic is one of the oldest ways we’ve tried to call it in. But there’s a nuance that matters. A love spell can be lower vibration or higher vibration, depending on how you cast it and where you’re casting it from.
The lower vibrational version
The lower vibrational version of a love spell is one aimed at making a specific person love you, whether they want to or not. It’s an attempt to control a circumstance by exerting your will over someone else’s.
It misses the truth of ALL ONE and non-duality: everything is already divine, and everything is already working out in the most harmonious way it possibly can. Our free will does exist. But our free will is the choice between a higher or lower vibrational experience. It isn’t the power to override someone else’s free will.
The irony is that this version of power has the least power. When you claw at an outcome outside yourself, you’re working from the outermost edge of your circles of power, where you have the least influence. When you raise your vibration and let divinity flow through you, you’re working from the center, where your power is concentrated.
An ancient temptation
People have been trying to force love for a very long time. The Greek Magical Papyri, a collection of spells from Greco-Roman Egypt written between roughly the 2nd century BCE and the 5th century CE, are full of erotic spells. Many are a type called agōgē, from the Greek for “leading,” meant to drag the beloved to the person casting the spell. Lovers also wrote binding curses on lead tablets and buried them.
What stands out when you read them is how violent they are. The classicist Christopher Faraone, in Ancient Greek Love Magic, describes spells that call for the target to burn, to be sleepless, to be unable to eat or drink until they come. That’s not love. That’s a desire to possess someone, wearing love’s clothes.
Those ancient spells show the lower vibrational version at its most extreme. Strip away the candles and the poetry, and a spell meant to force someone’s love is asking for their will to be bent to yours.
The higher vibrational version
But that’s not the only way to work love magic. Many modern witches follow the Wiccan Rede, first shared publicly by Doreen Valiente in 1964: “An it harm none, do what ye will.” For a lot of them, that doesn’t mean giving up love spells. It means changing their aim. Instead of casting on a specific person, they cast for self-love, for opening their heart, or for drawing in the right love without naming who it has to be. Hoodoo and many folk magic traditions also have long, open histories of love-drawing work.
That’s the higher vibrational version: a spell that works on you. It changes your energy, so you become a match for the love you want, and lets the universe bring the person who’s truly aligned with you.
The Abraham-Hicks teachings put it simply: you can’t create in someone else’s reality, only in your own. A higher vibrational love spell doesn’t fight that truth. It uses it.
Craving and attachment
The deeper issue isn’t just free will. It’s attachment.
In Buddhism, the second noble truth names tanha, craving or thirst, as the root of suffering. A spell cast from craving says: I need this specific person, in this specific way, or I can’t be okay.
In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna tells Arjuna that you have a right to your actions, but never to the fruits of your actions (2.47). Act, but release your grip on the outcome.
And in Christianity, 1 Corinthians 13 describes love as patient and kind, and says love does not insist on its own way. A spell that insists on its own way works against the very love it’s calling in.
In UNICULT, I put it bluntly: if you’re attached to a specific outcome, it’s because you have something to integrate. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have desires or goals. It means the clawing, desperate part of the desire is pointing to a wound.
The root is usually lack
Here’s the grueling part. We have no elders and very little guidance for it, but we all have to do the work of looking inside and asking: where does this desire really come from?
My desire to make one specific person love me, or to get super rich so I can boss people around, or to do any of the things that are actually lower vibration, is usually rooted in something I didn’t get in childhood. Love I didn’t receive. Safety I didn’t have. Being seen and heard.
That’s the difference between how I used to practice witchcraft and how I understand power now. Back then, I was sometimes exerting my will on the world from insecurity and lack. Now my magic starts within, and I let the most divine path flow. And when you heal the lack at the root, something surprising happens: your desires themselves change.
Find it within, and attract it
If you want true love and you’re not finding it, it’s not because you don’t deserve it. Deserving isn’t the point. It’s about an energetic state. You’re not yet aligned with it.
So make your love magic start within. Go back in your psyche and give yourself the love you didn’t receive as a child. Heal the shadow places where you feel the world betrayed you, or you betrayed yourself. Then visualize the love you want and feel it in your body, over and over, until it becomes a muscle. Keep going until there’s no longing left, because you already know how it feels. That’s a spell, too, and a powerful one.
Non-attachment doesn’t mean “I don’t care.” It means you’ve found the feeling within, so you no longer need to grip any one person to get it. And there’s nothing wrong with wanting, struggling, or longing for a while. It can even be romantic. But when you’re ready, cast your magic on the one person whose will you’re meant to shape: yourself. Become the love you’re looking for, and you’ll attract the love you desire.
A tool for the heart
If you want support in this work, I designed the True Love Attractor through Dolphin Technology for exactly this kind of love magic. It’s a reversible crystal circuit pendant made with rose quartz, sunstone, rainbow moonstone, black onyx, and crystal quartz. It’s designed to work with your heart’s own field, balancing your masculine and feminine energies so you become a clear, coherent match for stable, lasting love. You don’t aim it at anyone. You wear it over your heart.
