Who Do You Think You Are?

“Who do you think you are?”

Most of us first heard that as an insult. It’s what people say when you reach too high, dress too loud, or dream too big. It’s meant to shrink you back down to size.

I want you to hear it as a real question instead, maybe the most important one in all of manifestation. Who do you think you are? Because whatever your answer is, your life is quietly arranging itself around it. Think you’re the baddest in the world. Think you’re whoever you want to be.

    Your identity is everything

Look at how money works in families. People born into wealthy families often just start making money, because their identity says: I’m someone who makes a lot of money. People born into poor families often don’t, and if you ask why, they’ll shrug and say, well, that’s just who I am. I’m not a money person.

Neither of those is destiny. They’re identities, stories absorbed so early that they feel like facts. And identity is the operating system everything else runs on. You can visualize all day long, but if the person doing the visualizing believes “that’s not for people like me,” the vision has nowhere to land.

The good news is that an identity can be changed. You can change anything about your reality. But first you have to stop letting other people define you. Your family, your hometown, your exes, your boss, the algorithm: none of them gets to tell you who you are. You define yourself.

    The pop star cult leader

In 2012, I branded myself a pop star cult leader. No one knew who I was. There was no fan base, no cult, no charts. I just decided that’s who I was, and then I lived my life as that person.

And over time, reality caught up. Today I make music, I lead UNICULT, I preach every Sunday at Cam Church, I’ve written books, and people recognize me as exactly what I said I was. The identity came first. The evidence followed.

Performers have always known this trick. David Bowie became Ziggy Stardust. Beyoncé created Sasha Fierce to walk onstage with a boldness she said she didn’t yet feel as herself, until she grew into it and let the alter ego go. A character isn’t a lie. It’s a container that lets you practice being who you’re becoming.

    Make a character sheet

Here’s how to start. Draw it all out. Make a character sheet, like you would for a video game or a role-playing game, for the version of you that already has what you want. What do they wear? How do they talk? What time do they wake up? How do they walk into a room? What do they say yes to, and what do they say no to without apologizing? What do they believe about money, love, and their own power?

Then step into that character. Not someday. Today.

Psychology has names for this. The psychiatrist Alfred Adler used a technique called “acting as if,” asking clients to behave as though they already were the person they wanted to be. In a fun 2017 study published in Child Development, Rachel White and her colleagues found that young children who pretended to be a hardworking hero, like Batman, stuck with a boring task longer than kids who thought about the task as themselves. Researchers nicknamed it the Batman effect. And in Atomic Habits, James Clear describes every action you take as a vote for the type of person you want to become.

Your character sheet tells you how to vote.

    Find the ego in it

As soon as you write your character sheet, the voice will start. Who do you think you are? You can’t pull that off. People will laugh. That’s not realistic.

Good. Pay attention to that voice, because that’s where you find your ego. Wherever you doubt it could happen, wherever you feel yourself clawing at a specific outcome or bracing for rejection, there’s a part of you that needs to be integrated.

Don’t fight it, and don’t fake past it. Go within. Ask that doubtful part where it learned that you weren’t allowed to be this person. Often it goes back to childhood, to someone who told you to be smaller, quieter, more realistic. Do the shadow work. Give that part what it needed back then. Every doubt you integrate is one less thing standing between you and the character you’re stepping into.

    Manifestation practices built on identity

Identity work sits at the heart of manifestation traditions across the board.

The mystic Neville Goddard taught people to “live in the end,” to assume the feeling of the wish already fulfilled and to think from it rather than of it. His famous line: an assumption, though false, if persisted in, will harden into fact. That’s identity work in one sentence.

In Western ceremonial magic, practitioners in traditions like the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn practiced the assumption of god-forms, visualizing themselves as a deity so vividly that they took on its qualities. Chaos magicians later took this further, treating belief itself as a tool: choose a belief on purpose, inhabit it fully, and watch what it makes possible.

In UNICULT, I put identity right in the middle of the manifestation process:

    1. Desire an outcome.
    2. Visualize it emotionally, until you can feel it in your body.
    3. Find the ego in your doubts and your grasping.
    4. Integrate it through shadow work.
    5. Raise your vibration through gratitude, until you could cry from feeling what it’s like to have it.
    6. Do your identity work. Who do you think you are? Write the character sheet. Become the person who already has it.
    7. Practice ritually, across time. Use your hands to do the physical practice. Take aligned opportunities. Do the work of your true heart each day.

    Become it, every day

Identity isn’t something you decide once. It’s something you practice. Miracles absolutely happen, but to be ready for divine opportunities when they arrive, you have to be aligned with them. You build that alignment through ritual: physical practices, repeated across time, that keep putting you back into the character.

Maybe it’s getting dressed as your future self every morning. Maybe it’s a weekly session updating your character sheet, or speaking in that person’s voice, or doing one small thing each day that only they would do. Whatever you choose, make sure it’s aligned and make sure it’s fun. If your practice feels like punishment, you’re building an identity of someone who suffers for their dreams.

When I decided I was a pop star cult leader, nobody handed me permission. I gave it to myself, and then I kept showing up as that person until the world agreed.

So, who do you think you are? Answer it on purpose. Then go be that.
